This is what she sent me, a photograph of a ready made doona cover, otherwise known here as a comforter.
Now this is where I need as much help and advice as possible. I'm sure there must be a way to reproduce this in a quilt, but at this point I just can't figure it out. She'd like all the swirls included, in other words an exact copy. I do have a larger pdf photo if anyone thinks they can help me figure this out. I really want to make something that they want and know they'll use. So please if you can help me I'd be forever grateful.Happy Stitching.

Oh my goodness!! I think I would just buy her the dang comforter and make a quilt in matching colors to put at the foot of the bed.
Otherwise you would have to sew the strips together and then applique a sheer fabric to create the swirls....ok I am back to the quilt in coordinating colors to hang on the wall or put at the foot of the bed.
Gorgeous pic of the kids!!!!
I am afraid I am of no help in this department! Sorry!
I agree with Bren! The only thing that came to my mind would be to applique the swirls etc. on top of a strip pieced quilt. The comforter is beautiful and there isn't a shade of blue that I don't like. Maybe you can find out what they really like about it - the circular shapes etc. and then find quilts with those elements and let them pick from those designs. Just a thought!
I have to laugh. Two of my kids were married last year and it took me FOREVER to get them to tell me what sort of quilt they wanted. Actually, I gave up on one couple and just made them a quilt. The other couple gave me conflicting desires (she wanted blues, he wanted primary colors) and they ended up with blues. I second the suggestion to buy the comforter and make a matching quilt (that is a great idea!). I suspect in years to come the comforter will go by the wayside but the quilt will be treasured.
kids eh?
Linda buy the doona cover, then quilt it.. LOL
or make the quilt in the coloured strips and quilt the feathers/scrolls into it..
or buy the doona cover, and make a quilt in similar colours.. I'd be happy to receive a quilt that was made with love, than some mass produced doona cover.. tell them you can't make it EXACTLY the same, as it infringes on copyright! LOL
Good luck!

Oh, girlfriend, you are in a pickle now!! LOL The problem with asking is that sometimes they tell you.....!!!!
Maybe you could machine quilt the swirls in a darker color?
I agree with Bren and Marilyn . . . but the comforter and make a coordinating quilt. I would have no idea how to make a quilt that matches the photo.
Oh Linda! I have to agree with Bren. I would make a quilt or a wall hanging for another room. So much time and love goes into a quilt. I think that comforter would be difficult to make as a quilt. Good luck! I will add you to my draw.
My first thought too is to buy the doona cover. It keeps things simple and you know that they like it. And I think there is a place for both a quilt and a doona - seasons and temperatures change. The doona may be a thing that can stay on the bed and a matching quilt is something they can cuddle under on a couch or similar - it is not restricted to the bedroom. I find it so hard to make things to order and so I know that I would not enjoy making a copy. So make a quilt for them with love, reflecting both theirs and your taste and I think everyone will be happy. I hope that helps...
My suggestion - Buy 2 doona cover sets - the one they like and a plain, co-ordinating set. Undo the sides of the patterned doona cover, add batting, baste in the usual way using the doona cover backing as the quilt backing and quilt the swirls and stripes. Add binding in one of the plain colours. This way the quilt can sit on top of the doona. Clear as mud?
WOW I sure wish I could help but man that's quite a project for ya. Maybe you should just buy that comforter for them and make another quilt in those matching colors.
Wow what you need is EQ6 for the shading (I have been wanting it for a long time) and then maybe you could applique the swirls. Good luck :)
buy the cover and then make them a coordinating quilt using those colors.
everyone will be happy in the end and you won't be pulling your hair out trying to reproduce that.

Looks like you already got some great advise. Hope you find a solution- I would also buy the doona cover and make a coordinating quilt for the happy couple.
Wow Linda! You sure have a task set out for you!! Ill be interested to see what you come up with! I enjoyed reading the comments and i guess applique or quilted swirls seems the go....beautiful photo of the lucky couple!!
I TOTALLY AGREE with Bren!!! This is the thing to do. No doubt about it! You can pull some of the comforter colors into the quilt that you make. Personally, I adore a quilt folded and waiting on the foot of the bed, looks so pretty and ready to pull up for a bit of a nap. Go for it!
I am with the majority here. Just buy it for them and make a coordinating one to go with it.
PS: If you can't find the comforter to purchase, you must know that when they see the quilt that you made for them, they are going to forget all about that comforter. There! I think I'm done now. :)
Agree with Bren. Buy the comforter and get off easy. Make her a smaller throw with minky on the back as a shower gift. You could applique the swirls but ugh that would not be fun. This is one I made my daughter http://fredashive.blogspot.com/2008/02/engagement-quilt.html
good luck
It looks like several others came up with the only idea I had and that was to applique the swirls on to a sttrip pieced quilt.
Linda,
My very first thought was to definitely buy her the comforter! After reading other peoples comments, it seems like many of them feel the same way. I would buy it and in agreement with Bren, make her a quilt to match and put at the end of the bed or use a throw in the room.

I would suggest home interior fabrics (54" wide). You would probably have to work on a larger scale because of the weight but your options for 'ready made' swirls are much better.
Good luck!
I would buy the cover and make them a quilt to celebrate their 1st anniversary. Gives you plenty of time to work on something special that they will like.
If you are going to make a quilt then I would quilt the swirls not appliqué.vw
I agree with most of the comment, that to give them the comforter and make a coordination quilt.
I agree ... buy it and make a quilt that will go along and coordinate!
How about a wall hanging..you can do the background in the strips..and the swirls with fusible? You dont'have to applique it..just do a straight stitch along the edge. Since it wont' get washed much, it will not need more than that. Use a coordinating thread and everyone will be looking at the gorgeous swirls anyway..
I can't come up with anything new... I think you've got plenty of good advice here...
I have no help to offer on the comforter, but I wanted to tell you that your daughter is beautiful, and her fiancee is a nice looking young man.
